Clyde 0-2 Kilmarnock
The Bully Wee put in a spirited performance against Kilmarnock in the Betfred Cup this evening, but goals either side of the interval gave the Premiership side the victory.
Danny Lennon made three changes to the team from Saturday's loss at Airdrie, with Ally Love, Mark Lamont and Ross Cunningham all returning to replace Tom Lang, Chris Johnston and Kris Syvertsen.
David Mitchell had to be alert in the opening minutes, clawing away the ball from underneath his crossbar, whilst at the other end good buildup play saw Barry Cuddihy hit a shot on target which was held by Colin Doyle.
Both number 9s had opportunities they should have done better with; Eamonn Brophy made space for himself in the box but blazed his shot over, and then David Goodwillie was given a free header but couldn't direct it on target.
The Bully Wee put up a good showing against their Premiership opponents in the first-half and almost took the lead when Mark Lamont led a counter attack, but Ross Cunningham curled his effort past the post.
Mitchell pulled off a good save with his foot to deny Danny Whitehall from close range, but he was beaten by the forward a minute before the interval. Rory McKenzie was found with a cross at the back post, and he cut the ball back to Whitehall who rolled it into the net.
Killie doubled their advantage four minutes after the restart when McKenzie went on a mazy run and teed up Whitehall on the edge of the box. He curled his effort past Mitchell for his second goal of the evening.
The Bully Wee battled away for the remainder of the game and only the post denied them from pulling a goal back with ten minutes remaining. A flowing passing move saw Josh Jack play Kris Syvertsen in on goal but his sliding effort came back off the woodwork and bounced into the grasp of Doyle.
The visitors had chances to increase their lead with time running out but Mitchell made a fine save from Brophy and Shiels then Cuddihy both blocked shots in quick succession.
